What is Telemetry?

..... The word Telemetry comes from the Greek words for Remote (Tele) and Measure (Metron), and thus provides the the basis on which all Telemetry is based. A remote collection or measurement of data that is then retrieved for analysis and further studies.

..... There are so many ways that Telemetry can be applied to monitor small to large processes, provide floating point trending, report any failures & events, and ensure maintenance departments receive the information they need to operate effectively.

.....Telemetry Outstation / RTU - This is a piece of equipment that is located on each site, process or area of interest that you wish to monitor. Digital and Analogue signals are wired directly to this unit either from instruments and their respective control panels or via PLC / PAC type devices. The unit comes configured with communications devices to talk to the host station (see Top-End Telemetry Servers) and relay any information on Alarms, Events, Analogue (Floating) Values and so on, that the Outstation is picking up. There can also be communications configured for local communications to SCADA and other local intelligent devices.

.....Top-End Telemetry Servers - These servers act as the gateway and main core databases for all Telemetry data collected on any system. Communication is established with the Outstation / RTU and data is either retrieved from or submitted to the device. The top-end servers then translate this data into useable names where a Call Centre / Control Room agent can analyse the information and determine the course of action.

.....Business Intelligence Databases - These database's harvest data from the Telemetry System to build up valuable statistics and trends on performance and reliability of assets. The reporting can be done across the entire estate of Outstations or down to single alarms and signals on each RTU.

.....Maintenance Scheduling App's - These applications take information from the Telemetry System and schedule routine or fault rectification maintenance personnel based on the data collected. This can include in some cases, automated scheduling of the workforce to improve information flow throughout the process.
